Why Drones Should Deliver Your Pizza

Over the past few years, the market for drones has grown considerably around the world. Not only are they being used in industrial settings but a range of models targeting consumers has also been developed. More than a sci-fi novelty though, drones represent an opportunity to change several aspects of our economy. Perhaps none more than the delivery business.

Amazon has already started considering drone powered delivery of products, with its Prime Air scheme. The project will use drones to deliver small objects in 30 minutes or less. Last year, the project all but got approval from USA’s Federal Aviation Administration, heralding the adoption of the drone delivery methods in other countries as well.

Drone delivery is about more than just Amazon though. Drones are much more eco-friendly than traditional methods of transportation like cars and bikes. Outside of the wide-scale adoption of electric vehicles — which is not on the horizon — they represent the best way to deliver packages across cities.

This is why it is so important for the State to start looking at the adoption of drone technology more seriously. Without State support, the industry will never truly take off. With government incentives, drones can very quickly become the go-to method of delivery economy wide.

In fact, this is an industry that doesn’t even require much special attention. With a burgeoning consumer market on the horizon, passing regulation regarding drones will open the door to both a whole new consumer durable market as well as streamline existing business operations. Further, drones could be a substantial part of the move towards green technology moving forward. The State already sets clean energy goals for the private sector. Why not take it a step forward and help entrepreneurs achieve those goals?

In a sci-fi utopia, drones constitute an integral part of the society. They represent an end to redundant forms of labour: no one grows up wanting to be a delivery person. Delivery jobs exist in our society because we have so far failed to create an economy where menial tasks such as it can be carried out by machinery. Automation and machinery are creating an opportunity for us to move in this direction, so that people can be preoccupied with professions that really matter. In other words, people shouldn’t deliver your pizza — drones should.
